birding in the Caucasus region
- Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia and the Manych area, southern Russia
In the minds of most Western birders the Caucasus and its birds have played a somewhat marginal role, both geographically and in terms of sought-after species. In a majority of trip reports and other forums, bird watching in the region seems to be synonymous with the high-altitude specialities for which the mountain range is known – Caucasian Black Grouse, Caspian Snowcock, Güldenstädts Redstart and Greater Rosefinch to name the more illustrous of them – in the birding community. The site mentioned in connection with these species is most often Kazbegi in Georgia.
Thus, this section of the web site seeks to widen the field-of-view of visitors for the benefit of other, equally amazing birding grounds in Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and the Manych region in southernmost Russia.
